Writing is a crucial element for students’ success, both inside and outside of school. The ability to clearly communicate ideas in writing is required for high school, university, and any job. However, it is also the scariest subject to teach. Writing is highly subjective and many times, as teachers, we are underprepared to instruct students in their writing.
This course is for you if you are:
- Struggling to structure a writing block that is beneficial to the students in the time allotted and meets the standards
- Unsure of how to help the students move forward as writers or how to teach the different components of writing.
- Not confident on how to conference with a student to help move them forward
- Interested in really learning what evidence-based strategies help students become stronger writers
- Needing more ideas and lessons that you can use in your current writers’ workshop
- Curious how to grade student writing and get enough grades for writing
- Battling students when it comes time to conduct peer conferences or getting them to edit and revise their writing.
The virtual training is organized into 5 two-hour modules. While we know that many virtual trainings are on-demand, we have opted for a cohort approach to our Writers’ Workshop training. We believe there is strength and accountability in community, especially during these uncertain times. In our experience, this type of sustained professional development has been proven to be most effective in producing long-term success of implementation.
Module 1 will begin in the summer so teachers will have time to plan their implementation before school is back in session (online, in-person, or however that looks!). Then, after several weeks of implementing new ideas, Module 2 will be released with plenty of practical ideas that will build upon the previous strategies, and on throughout the year. In between the modules, teachers will be a part of an online community through a private Facebook group where they can share ideas and challenges, get encouragement and support, and continue to grow with like-minded professionals from around the world.
